Busselton 70.3 Ironman Training Program

Written by Moya Jones on . Posted in News

There are still places available for the 70.3 Ironman Training Program run by Coach Brad Hosking.

Commencing Monday Jan 29, the 14 week squad experience will be something you won’t want to miss.

Be you a first timer, (especially for you guys) seasoned vet, male, female, young or old, the squad is a wonderful opportunity to grow and expand your ability and knowledge in the sport of long course triathlon, all whilst enjoying the wonderful camaraderie of old and new friends and the many benefits that training in a likeminded focussed group brings. You simply will never experience these things outside of the squad environment.

Brad has raced in many Ironman competitions and has been coaching many athletes to be able to compete at the best of their abilities.

Entering his ninth year as a coach,  Brad chose very early to focus exclusively on the half and full Iron distance disciplines. With a combined 12 full and half Iron distance races as a competitor over this very course, (as well as qualifying and racing Kona), countless training sessions over the same ground and numerous specific Busselton 70.3 and IM squads as a coach, Brad is very well qualified in helping equip and empower the members of this great club with the confidence, technical knowhow and mental and physical skills necessary to go out there and get the very most from yourself come race day. Come and be a part of it and experience it for yourself.

What’s On Guide

What’s on guide

December re-cap

December included some pretty big events for a lot of NCTC’ers, with months of training finally being put to good use in either Busselton or Hilary’s (or in some cases both!):

  • Ironman Western Australia and Ironman 70.3 Western Australia – Wow, that was a scorcher! The heat was turned up to 100% for the iconic Busselton events, and that wasn’t the only challenge… Sharks and forest fires added a few curve balls along the way, but while the NCTC ‘Where’s Wally’ cheerleaders maintained top form throughout, the effort put in by NCTC athletes on what was a very tough day was second to none.  Plenty of success in both the full and 70.3 events, heaps of first-timers battling to make the finish, loads of personal goals fulfilled, and even some tickets earned to Kona…that was one to remember!  Well done to all involved; competitors and supporters!
  • Sunsmart Triseries Race 1, Hilary’s – So those who entered Busso and lost out on their swim thought “I know, I’ll enter Hilary’s and at least there we’ll get to swim there”…er, no such luck! The forecast storm arrived and the swim was cancelled, replaced with a run-bike-run format.  That didn’t stop NCTC from putting in a good shift with several podium finishes recorded and a huge contingent from NCTC taking part.  On to round 2 now!

We also had two aquathlons (rounds 4 and 5)…I hope you enjoyed your pizza at round 5!  Rahul Jegatheva again took honours in both events, with Madison Toovey again taking the female category wins (both won their respective junior categories).  In the seniors, Fiona Longden was 1st female home in round 4 with Morgan Marsh taking honours in round 5.  Rob Pouw took the win in the senior male round 4, with Rob Hall taking the same result in round 5.  Congrats to everyone who took part and see you at the next round!

January Events

A quiet month during January as we all try and recover from the holidays:

Rounds 6 and 7 of the Aquathlon Series – Sorrento SLSC –5/01/2018 and 19/01/18 – More of the same down at Sorrento SLSC, and a great opportunity to put in final preparations for the Club Series Championship Aquathlon NCTC are hosting on Friday 2nd.  If you haven’t already done so, please enter your details on Webscorer which makes the whole evening go a lot smoother.  The format is as per normal, a short swim (400-600 m typically) followed by a short run (just over 3km usually).  It’s a laid-back, relaxed evening…a great way to round out your week!

SunSmart TriSeries Race 2 – Rockingham – 14/01/2018 – Round 2 of the Tri Series, and is also a qualifier for the world age group championships.  With the world sprint championships in Queensland next year, the competition will be fierce to try and qualify for the World’s.  A flat course involving a 750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run.  Entries are still open so get on it!

Australia Day Triathlon – Point Walter – 26/01/2018 – An always popular novice and sprint distance triathlon, with a duathlon option also, set on the Swan River.  There’s a range of distances for juniors and seniors so sure to be something to suit everyone.  A somewhat twisty and hilly cycle leg, but don’t let that put you off – this one is a cracker!

Open Water Swim Series – Sorrento – 26/01/2018 – So if you don’t fancy the Point Walter Triathlon, how about an open water swim at our local beach.  This one always draws a big crowd and is a nice chance to swim a marked open water course.  Distance options include 150 m, 500 m, 1.25 km, 2.5 km, 5 km and 10 km.  The 10 km option is also a qualifier for the Rotto swim.

Registration on the night takes place from 5.45pm. Race briefings commence at 6.05pm and racing starts at 6.15pm.

We very much encourage new members to come along, introduce yourself and get involved. The club prides itself on running the most competitive Aquathlon series in the state, at the lowest possible cost to members.

We use the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club courtyard area for pre-race registrations, post race announcements and presentations. Volunteers provide a BBQ for competitors and spectators.  Families are very welcome as we encourage all members to participate young and old, male and female.

Aquathlons provide a regular event for club members to get together and compete in a friendly but competitive atmosphere. It also allows non-participating members the opportunity to cheer and support fellow club members who are competing. Club members of all ages and abilities participate and it is an excellent way for newer members to get themselves introduced to other club members. We have participants from 13 years and above take part. Results are based on a handicap system with prizes awarded at the end of year presentation dinner.

Looking forward to seeing there on Friday.
