October Re-cap

by James Knipe

October kicked off the season for a lot of us with the State and Australian Duathlon Championships at Champion Lakes.  We had over 30 participants which included a whopping 13 top-3 finishers, of which 5 were Australian titles (with additional state titles on top of this), ranging from the 14-15 to 75-79 age groups, and plenty in between…too many names to list! Well done to everyone who took part and represented the club with pride.  For once the normally gale-force Champion Lakes weather gave us a bit of a break making for some fast times throughout.

Also kicking off was the club Aquathlon series sponsored by BikeForce Joondalup, Blu Smooth Wetsuits and Cartridge World Wembley.  After a false start due to poor weather, the series finally got moving at event 2 on 27th October.  29 brave souls battles the wind and cold and results are available here, with line honours going to the familiar faces of Rahul Jegatheva (Overall and Male Junior), Ayesha Scott (1st Female and Female Junior), Michelle Martin (Female Senior) and Cameron Storm (Male Senior).  Well done to all who participated.

Slightly further afield we had some great representation at Kona once again.  Just getting there is an incredible achievement but it seems that our club members weren’t intent on just going along for the journey, but each proceeded to put in incredible performances.  Blake, Allison and Alan all did the club and themselves proud, and left the rest of us mere mortals in awe.  Finally, club member Rob Pouw has put together a great podcast during which he talks to Alan about his journey – well worth a listen.

Apologised in advance if we missed anyone, but feel free to get in touch with any special achievements or mentions!

November Events

November is a busy month with plenty of events around the Perth area worth considering.  Most important of all however have got to be right here on our doorstep – The Max Greive Memorial Run and round 3 of the Aquathlon Series.

Max Greive Memorial Run – Sorrento SLSC –10/11/2017 – A popular club event to remember a club icon as we battle it out for the Big Chain Ring trophy.  Two distance options, 10 km and 5 km, starting at 6pm.  No worries if the distance is a struggle, feel free to walk some or all of the course…it’s all for a good cause – gold coin(s) donation which goes to The Cancer Council of Australia.  Water is provided on course, and there is a presentation and BBQ in the SSLSC courtyard after.

Round 3 of the Aquathlon Series – Sorrento SLSC –17/11/2017 – Come on down again for a fun evening of social racing and a BBQ after at SSLSC.  If you haven’t already done so, please enter your details on Webscorer which makes the whole evening go a lot smoother.  The format is as per normal, a short swim (400-600 m typically) followed by a short run (just over 3km usually).  It’s a laid-back, relaxed evening…a great way to round out your week!

All TWA sanctioned events for November are summarised below – too many to go into detail on!  But we’ve picked out some highlights anyway…

Augusta Adventure Race – Augusta – 4 & 5/11/2017 – The biggest adventure race in the world (they claim!), featuring a mix of trail/beach running, open water swimming, mountain biking and kayaking.  A real challenge in a beautiful location.  Junior and senior events…well worth adding to your bucket list if you haven’t already done it!

Exceed Super Sprint – Champion Lakes – 4/11/2017 – Following a similar format to the recent Super League Triathlon Series, this event is basically three short races in one day, with the sequence of events rotated each round.  Race 1 is swim / bike / run, race 2 is run / bike / swim and race 3 is swim / run / bike.  Sounds fun, eh?!  And to top it all off, it’s draft legal so a chance to get racing in a pack for a change (but sorry, no TT bikes allowed).

Mandurah State Interclub Championship – Mandurah – 26/11/2017 – Your club needs you!  This is round one of the club event series but also is the club championship, and the prizes are based on the number of competitors from each club as a proportion of that club’s membership…so the more people we have turn up, the better our chances of reclaiming the club championship trophy!  It’s sprint distance (750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run), and the swim location is really very pleasant with a nice flat run to finish things off.  It’s a great event with a fantastic atmosphere as clubs compete against each other for bragging rights, and is a great first race of the season to get you in the triathlon mood!  The club tent and BBQ will be there as an additional enticer!

Weekly Update

Written by Moya Jones on . Posted in News

Kelli and Virginia were very disappointed when they heard that the first Aquathlon of the season was cancelled due to bad weather.  Sorry ladies, oh and everyone else… Thunder and Lightning, very, very frightening…  Due to adverse weather conditions we had no choice but to cancel the event.  The beach was closed and the lightning strikes continued well into the night.  But the good news is the second race is only 2 weeks away!!!!

The series is once again sponsored by Bikeforce Joondalup.  This year’s major prize is a Wheelset or store credit to the value of $1,000.  This is a fantastic prize and well worth the 6 event minimum.  Bikeforce Joondalup will also have spot prizes throughout the season.  Thank you to Dave and Candy at Bikeforce Joondalup for their continued support.  If you need anything bike, go see the guys and gals and Bikeforce Joondalup.

Thanks to Mike Bosch, we have also secured some more end of season Aquathlon prizes.  Each time you complete an Aquathlon you get 1 entry into the draw for…

Prize 1   Blu_Smooth MK1 Open Water Wetsuit    Blu_Smooth (002)

This prize has been donated by Blu_Smooth

Top features of the Wetsuit

  • YAMAMOTO (Japanese – best Neoprene available) #38 Smooth skin Neoprene = stretch and comfort come from this extremely lightweight and low density rubber. Low density = maximum buoyancy=more speed
  • Super Composite Skin – Is a hydrodynamic coating that improves swimming speeds by reducing drag, allowing the suit to glide through water more efficiently
  • Low cut friction free neck – the neck panel sits low and flat against the neck to limit water entry and eliminates the `choking’ effect.
  • Blu_Smooth is sold direct, so there is no middle man to increase the price.

If you mention you’re a North Coast member, until the end of November 2017, you can get $100 off  a new wetsuit.  For more information or to ask any questions e-mail – customercare@blusmooth.com.au or call Vince Davis on 0417 – 925577.

Prize 2    CANON MAXIFY MB 5460 Printer

This prize has been donated by Cartridge World Wembley – 186a Harbourne Street.

The Wembley store offers North Coast Triathlon Club members a 10% discount on all Cartridge World Ink and Laser cartridges. To redeem your 10% discount, advise the Wembley store manager that you are a member of NCTC.

Great turn out for the Season Opener today.  Rob had a captive audience (they had no choice, isn’t that right Fiona) as he delivered the clubs vision and significant events for the coming year.  The Mandurah Interclub will be held on 26th November.  Keep this date in your diary…WE NEED YOU!!!

What’s On Guide

Written by Stuart King on . Posted in News

October sees the season kick-off which no doubt we’ve all been looking forward to.  Time to dust-off the tri-suit and put on your club colours for the season ahead.  In this newsletter we’ll be giving a quick summary of upcoming TWA sanctioned events local to WA, and as the season progresses we’ll give a brief recap on some of the local races from the previous month where NCTC has been represented.

City of Armadale Duathlon – Champion Lakes – 08/10/2017 – We start with a bang and straight in to the first State Championship race of the year which just so happens to be the Australian Championship also.  We can all agree it’s best to wait for the WA heat to arrive before getting our feet wet, so starting with a duathlon is a perfect way to start the season.  Held at Champion Lakes in Armadale, this race is also race 1 of the Junior Triathlete of the Year Series.  Given that it is a State Championship it also counts as race 1 of the Triathlete of the Year series.  Consisting of a run / bike / run format, a range of distances are available to test us; Tadpoles (7-11 years) have 500 m / 2 km / 250 m to negotiate, and for the seniors there is the short course (2.5 km / 8 km / 1.5 km) and long course (5 km / 20 km / 2.5 km).

Phoenix Aquathlon – Guildford – 08/10/2017 – If you really feel like you simply must get wet, and the (reducing) chance of rain at Champion Lakes isn’t enough, then get across to Guildford for the pool-based Phoenix Aquathlon.  Again, a range of distances are available from Tri-stars (7-11) with a 100 m swim and 750 m run, Junior (12-15) with a 250 m swim and 1.7 km run, and Senior (over 15) with a 400 m swim and 3 km run.  There is also a relay option for teams of four, with each team member completing their swim-run before handing over to the next.

Kalgoorlie Womens Triathlon – Kalgoorlie – 15/10/2017 – If you prefer to spend more time driving than racing, and are of course female, then head East until you find Kalgoorlie.  200 m swim, 9 km bike and 2 km run for those that venture out, although attendance at a seminar on 2nd September was compulsory, so probably more suitable for the Kalgoorlie locals!

TWA Development Program Draft Legal Race 1 – Champion Lakes – 28/10/2017 – Back to Champion Lakes for the Juniors for race 2 of the Junior Triathlete of the Year Series.  A draft legal event for ages 12 to 23, featuring a fun enduro format whereby there are two races of 250 m swim / 8km bike / 2 km run, with a short break in between.  The first across the line of the second race picks up the win.  Note that as it is draft legal, to compete in this race you will need an ITU bike endorsement.

Good luck to all competitors.  Remember to wear your NCTC gear to ensure you pick up the biggest cheers and the free speed boost that comes with it!
