Welcome back from what we hope was a nice little holiday break! It’s full steam ahead with events popping up every weekend. Congrats to all our members who competed in the Exceed Super Sprint Series, special mention to Dianna Broadhurst who achieved a first place clean sweep, winning all three events in her category. Also we had a fantastic turn out for the Coastal Quest Sprint race, lots of red on our home turf and great Club support.
We have a crazy amount of activity coming up so please stay tuned, we endeavour to reach as many of you as possible, for regular updates log on to our Facebook page and member’s Group. We also have an active Instagram account @northcoasttriclub that gives you a snap of what members are up to or what training sessions are going on.
Bill Whalley’s OWS sessions on Friday have been hugely popular, catering for all levels of ability…don’t be shy in coming down and joining in. There have been a few queries about whether non-members are welcome, this is an exclusive session we are offering for members only (one of the perks of being part of our great club!).

12 January – Whitfords Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser
The Club is looking for volunteers to help with a Whitfords Bunnings “Sausage Sizzle” on the 12th of January. Please contact Kim Whitlock Chandler at email@example.com this is a general fundraiser for the Club with some of the money raised going towards 25th Anniversary celebrations, any all help would be much appreciated, a roster will be posted on the Facebook Group Page or contact Kim directly.
We also have a jar at Grill’d Hillarys for the month of January, so if you are down there having a burger make sure you drop your bottle tops in the jar! AND of course encourage family and friends to do so too.
19 January – 25th Anniversary Cocktail Party

1 February Club Event Series Aquathlon
Calling for volunteers! NCTC will be hosting the Interclub Aquathlon on 1st February and we need volunteers to help with event set-up, registration, marshalling, scoring/timing and BBQ. Please contact James Knipe via Facebook or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org if you can help out. We need as many volunteers as possible to make this event a success.

I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would not only win my age group but also qualify for Kona. It has been a very surreal experience and it is still really sinking in that next October I will be standing on the start line of the holy grail of triathlon. Kona was never really on my radar, until I came 3rd at Ironman New Zealand back in March where I missed out by one position, as there were only 2 x slots for Kona. With that result being so close and yet so far, it certainly put the fire in the belly and gave me a bit of belief that maybe I might be capable of qualifying.
The “Road to Kona” little did I know it then, really started two years ago when I changed coaches and starting training with our own NCTC endurance coach Brad Hosking and the awesome T6D squad aka the Turtles!. The structured programme, support and experience Brad provides has really been beneficial to me and his methods have produced results I never thought capable of achieving.

Onto the race day and it is a long day for everything to go right and fortunately for me I had one of those good days, where it did. I felt well prepared, was injury free and in the right head space to have a good event. I was so nervous at the swim start, my hands were shaking and I could hardly put my goggles on. Once we started swimming I got into a nice rhythm and this resulted in a 4 min PB swim for me. I was fifth out of the water in AG at this stage
As tempting as it was to “smash the bike”, I stuck to my pacing strategy and kept to my power numbers to ensure I had good running legs off the bike. I was also lucky not to get a puncture as I seemed to hit every pothole on the bike course and nearly crashed into a barrier at one stage. I finished the 180 km with a 3 min PB and was now in 1st position in AG by 15 mins.
I started the run feeling good and the legs did not feel trashed from the bike. The adrenaline and excitement of being in front with a good buffer at the start of run really kept me going. I knew I just had to keep it steady and try and hold my targeted running pace for as long as possible and see what happens to the chasers behind me. At the 28 km mark the inevitable fatigue started to set in and my pace was dropping, so I decided to then start walking the aid stations and hit the coke for the last lap. Thankfully the Ladies chasing me were slowing too and the gap never really changed from 15 mins.
Running down the red carpet was up there with one of the best days of my life, being able to slow down and really enjoy and soak in the moment with lots of hugs and high fives!
11 hr 05 mins ended up being a 30 min PB from Taupo IM and a huge 50 min PB on this course from two years ago.
Huge shout out to Fiona Longden and the “Wallys” for best on ground support by any triathlon club. You guys rocked!! You kept our spirits high with all your cheers on the day.
Special mention and thank you to Mike Bosch for being a fantastic mentor, running coach and getting me into the right headspace for this event. Boschies running interval sessions on Thursday night are not to be missed!
Last but not least I can’t thank Brad enough for coaching me and I give credit to him for my successful day, achieving a lifetime goal and making a dream become reality in qualifying for Kona.
