We ride as a bunch and try to do 3-4 loops (riders can peel off at any time as suit their needs). Ideally, the first loop is done at any easy pace and then we build the pace for each lap – the aim is to keep the pace consistent throughout the whole lap – no surging, no sprint efforts. North Coast Tri Club News Update

Firstly! Big congratulations to Alan Hartley and Brad Kaye, both members reaching legend status on the weekend. Alan completed his second Kona World Champs Ironman race and Brad his first. Judging by all the commentary and race records broken, it must have been perfect conditions for the iconic race. A lot of North Coasters were up early Sunday morning tuning in to history being made. A good boost to the mental prep for all our members doing the Ironman in Busselton no doubt.

If you couldn’t make the Season Opener, you did miss out on some good fun. Great turn out and the take home message from Club President Milou Smeets, was to reach out and be the person who looks out for fellow members, we are inclusive, we are welcoming and we are supportive.

Members were treated to a “25 year anniversary Buff” and a big announcement. The 25 year Anniversary Committee confirmed the 19th of January as the date for a celebratory event at AQWA. To help subsidise costs for the event we raffled off a “Dive with the Sharks” pass on Sunday at the Season Opener. The lucky winner Ayesha Scott has the option of diving on the evening of our AQWA event, while the guests look on and enjoy canapés.

North Coast Tri Club News Update

The first big season event was this weekend, the annual Tour de Lancelin. A fantastic turn out of 53 riders and an amazing entourage of support crew and volunteers. If you didn’t make it, you did miss a great day. The weather was perfect, the scones delicious, traffic good and the pub lunch worth it. The biggest achievement was a fundraising effort of $725.00 on the day. This will be donated to two worthy charities ‘The Fathering Project’ and ‘Fight MND’. Thank you for your support, consideration on the road for fellow riders and traffic. Huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing this event together.

The second big event the Season Opener is this Sunday 14 October. Join us at Sorrento Surf Lifesaving Club from 3-6pm. A chance to get out of the training gear and meet some of the club members. The Board will be introducing themselves and giving you a taste of what is planned for the year. This is a family friendly event with drinks and finger food available. Don’t miss out.

Big weekend for two of our athletes. Kona Ironman World Championships are taking place this Saturday (Hawaii time). We wish Alan Hartley and Brad Kaye all the best in their races and look forward to hearing all about it on their return!

A week in the life of a Triathlon Technical Official…

Written by Zena Coffey on . Posted in Race report

Race report: Sue Scott

A week in the life of a Triathlon Technical Official at the Grand Final of the ITU World Triathlon Championships, Gold Coast.

I arrived in anticipation on the Gold Coast Sunday afternoon, prepared for a busy and challenging week. The week started on Monday 10th September for the Level 1 ITU course held at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre where the Commonwealth Games Swimming Events had been held, just a couple of months before. The course was attended by 18 other officials and was led by Jacqui Kenny (QLD) and Frank Stapleton (a familiar face). It was great having this course in the lead up to the GF, as what we were experiencing was a course in action. The second day, we as a group Technical Officials, attended the AG race briefing delivered by Jacqui to the Team Managers of the 46 participating nations. The Senior Technical Team were also in attendance to address and answer any questions. The ITU course finished at 1 pm. Most of us, then booked into the provided accommodation, ideally located right next door to the race site.

SueScott_1

Wednesday 12th September started promptly at 7.30 am with a meeting of all the other 70+ Technical Officials, and receiving our uniform and radios. We soon broke into our designated groups. I was an Assistant Swim Official along with my two colleagues Andy (NSW) and Tee (Malaysia). Chief Swim Official was Michael Haarsma with Technical Delegate Ross Capill (NZ). There were swim course familiarisations and in the afternoon the Open Aquathlon where I took to the water on the back of a Jet ski.

SueScott_2

Thursday 13th September, the same pattern continued with swim familiarisations and in the afternoon the Sprint distance Age groups raced where everything went to plan until one individual in the 2nd last wave decided to cut the course but remedied their fault and went back to swim around the 1st buoy. Thursday night was spent with some fellow Technical Officials at the GC Conference Centre with the Australian Age groupers and Australian Team who weren’t racing in the coming days and VIP’s of Triathlon Australia for the Champion’s Dinner compered by Brooke Hanson and her father. A lovely speech was made by one of the Emma’s, the first Emma = Emma Carney and her Triathlon journey. Thanks to TriWA and fellow Technical Officials, I was nominated and was the recipient of the Rob George Award. Thanks also to those that I have met interstate as well as to Triathlon Australia for continued support and professional development of the Technical program.

Friday 14th September-Sunday 16th September 2018 were jam packed with swim familiarisations, warm ups, taking of water temperatures and then races where I was designated Boat 2. Being a swim official on a boat, one needs to continually observe behaviour of athletes in the water at the same time as recording any irregularities as when the penalty is called, one needs to provide evidence of this and the calling needs to be done promptly as the penalty needs to be served in T1. Unfortunately a southerly wind really blew up on the Sunday afternoon for the Men’s Elite race, making for challenging conditions for the athletes as well as the Technical Officials on the boats. We thankfully had volunteer Technical Officials to assist with the recordings with the Women’s and Men’s Elite races along with the helicopter above. Sunday late afternoon, all was done and dusted and a week’s hard work, (for some after a year of preparation) ended with the Technical Official’s debriefing and then a group photo on the stage. What an event, what a week and I would do it all over again if given a chance! Being a Technical Official is always being part of a team and what a team it was. The backing of the STT on the calls I did make, were second to none. Every Technical Official in their own role allocation contributed to the absolute success of the Gold Coast Grand Final 2018.

SueScott_3

If you have any interest or wonder what it takes to become a Triathlon Technical Official, don’t hesitate to contact your local State office or go to the Triathlon Australia Website. Here in WA on the 20th October 2018 a Level 1 TO course is being run. Please get in contact with the TriWA office.

North Coast Tri Club News Update

Written by Zena Coffey on . Posted in News

And just like that September draws to a close. Goodbye off-season and hello training and events! From first hand experience, the water at Sorrento Beach still has the chill factor that could strip paint from wood. There have been a few brave souls who’ve ventured in with no wetsuit and are still breathing. Once your circulatory system recovers it is quite nice!

This is the week we head North! Tour de Lancelin is happening this Saturday, Ride Leader David Martin has written a brief for the event which can be found here. If you are attending, please make sure you read through it before the day. Fingers crossed for good weather.

This October we have the WIT course starting, Trystars starting and the beginning of the infamous Aquathlon series. It strikes fear in to the heart of many a non-swimmer! It’s also a great social catch-up at the end of the working week and a chance to unwind with other club members and family. Details will follow closer to the event. We will be asking for volunteers to help man the BBQ, so don’t be shy in coming forward!

Season Opener

“Drumroll”….Our Club’s Season Opener is Sunday 14 October, 3-6pm at Sorrento Surf Lifesaving Club. A great opportunity for meeting with club members new and old, working out who is in your age group and hearing about what North Coast have planned for the season. We encourage you all to come along and have some fun, this is a family friendly event.

On Wednesday night, the 25 Year Celebrations Committee met for the first time and there were some great ideas flowing on how to mark the occasion. Keep your ears tuned, more details to be announced soon.

THURSDAY 4th October

RIDE: HEPBURN LOOPS

Venue: Meet at Celebrations Whitfords
Time: 5:45am– 7:00am
The Hepburn Loops ride is based on laps around a 10km circuit in Hillarys. We start at Whitfords Shops (outside Celebrations) and take Whitfords Ave to Hepburn Ave, then back to Whitfords along Marmion Ave – we turn left into Banks Ave down to the roundabout and head past Bunnings and back onto Whitfords Ave – thus completing 1 loop/circuit. The final lap is your fastest effort but steady the whole way. Great training for everyone.

See WEBSITE for more information.

North Coast Tri Club News Update

Written by Zena Coffey on . Posted in News

So why all that effort for a sprint race triathlon? Stephen Holmes gives us a personal account of the journey to compete in the 2018 ITU WORLD TRIATHLON GRAND FINAL. Not Going The Distance is a great read, especially if you have ‘been there, done that’ with the longer distance races. The heart pumping ride of a Sprint or Standard distance race is sometimes overlooked, it takes a different skills set to excel in this category.

North Coast have had a busy week with ‘Welcome Letters’ being distributed (in person if you were lucky enough to catch Fiona Longden at training). There’s also a lot of work going on behind the scenes to make more Club Kit available, especially with InterClubs rapidly approaching. Keep your eyes peeled on the FaceBook Group for posts regarding this in the next week. Finn’s Kiosk has FINALLY opened, so expect Sorrento Surf Club to be a bit busier in the coming weeks, you are bound to bump into a North Coaster most mornings down there. The Fundraising Sausage Sizzle was a huge success and the groups of volunteers who covered the day worked like a well oiled machine pumping out the hotdogs, who said Triathlon wasn’t a team sport?? Thanks to everyone who gave up time to help out, it was much appreciated! Thanks to Kim Whitlock Chandler for coordinating.

Jan Eccles has offered another perspective on the 2018 ITU WORLD TRIATHLON GRAND FINAL, from joking about qualifying, to signing up for two events, to completing the distance. Jan certainly knows how to “Ride The Wave“. A great read, especially for those who dare to dream.

A short week this week, so hang on tight and enjoy the sunshine! Tour de Lancelin is rapidly approaching and bus seats and bike spots are filling up, don’t delay in booking your place back. The Season Opener is around the corner and The Board have a few surprises in store, so mark it in the diaries or you’ll miss out.
