Max Greive was a founding member of the North Coast Triathlon Club. Max was renowned for always making the extra effort that was required to succeed, whether it was in sport, work or life in general. He was at times a hard task master, but he never asked of others more than he was prepared to give of himself. His peers described him as a gentleman and an inspiration to all he came into contact with.

The spirit of Max – family man, Triathlete, schoolteacher and all round good guy lives on in perpetuity for the North Coast Tri Club, through the “Max Greive Classic” 10k run. The first race was held on Sunday 3/1/1999 at Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club consisting of 2 x 5k out and back loops. The club was fortunate that Max was able to start the inaugural race. The race format has remained the same, although a 5k sprint that is run concurrently was introduced in 2000 and is now contested as the “Small Chainring” Bolter.

I am sure Max would be exceptionally proud of where the North Coast club is today. Despite the cold winds of the evening, the warm spirit of the club shone through, with an impressive number of competitors, supporters and volunteers, and many faces, old and new.

It was great to see one of the “old” faces from Max’s era, still looking relatively youthful, and inspired to run an impressive 36’38” in difficult conditions to take out the victory and “Big Ring” trophy. Congratulations Chris Letts. This is Chris’s second victory in an event close to his heart. Special mention should be made of runner-up Daniel Hudson, who pushed Chris so very close, almost to the point of cracking. Unfortunately for Daniel he was not able to call on Max’s inspiration that drove Chris to his extra effort.

Congratulations in the Ladies’ race go to Morgan Marsh, whose time of 45’22” ensures her name is added to an impressive list of winners over the years. Well done!

A repeat winner of the Female Junior “Small Chainring Bolter”, was Tegan Scott, who won the 5km race outright, in a time a fraction over 20 minutes. A brilliant effort! The Junior Male winner, rewarded for his perseverance, was Alex Black. Good job!

There were many performances worthy of comment. Just two are highlighted here: Brenton Davies, a previous winner of the Big Ring Trophy, and the course record holder of the traditional Aquathlon course, returned for a guest appearance. Despite having their hands full with 4 young children, including one new-born (congratulations again Hayley and Brenton), being busy with his new business, and having less than 24 hours notice, Brenton turned up at the very last minute and claimed 4th place with a time of 38’55”.

On a difficult night a negative split was elusive for most. Not however for Kelli O’Neill who paced herself perfectly. Great effort.

There are many people who contributed to the organisation and running of this event. Naming anyone is dangerous, as so many are worthy of mention, but the North Coast Committee, Eddie Girvan, drink station volunteers and Rosa Illingworth’s BBQ crew deserve much of the credit. Thanks also to everyone who organised, contributed, volunteered, participated and supported this important occasion on the annual North Coast calendar. Once again, a great night!
