NEW SWIM SESSION

Written by Janine Kaye on . Posted in News

WEDNESDAY NIGHT OUTDOOR SWIM SESSION

We had an amazing turnout at Wednesday nights swim session, both indoor and out. I had 26 swimmers complete the CSS test and I was so pleased with how patient everyone was while I managed the groups and recorded times. Thank you to my wonderful swimmers!

With Busselton half training starting for some, and others working on their swim fitness for the rest of the season, I expect numbers might stay high and I want to ensure everyone has a solid and enjoyable swim session.

I am unfortunately unable to gain any more lane space at the 6.30 timeslot so at present we have a broad range of swim paces in each lane. So starting this week, I am trialing holding 2 sessions on Wednesday night in the outdoor pool;

Session 1 is the current session, 6:30-7:30pm.

Session 2 will directly follow it at 7:30-8:30pm.

The sessions will be exactly the same, threshold work based on CSS pacing using the tempo trainers. As I can’t guarantee attendance and I have no desire to limit it, I wanted to give people 2 options to try to distribute the volume of people and ensure everyone has an enjoyable and solid swim.

If you are able to attend the 7.30pm session, I would love you to come along to that instead. I know a lot of people worry about later swims with eating and sleeping. I recommend ideally having an early dinner (6pm at the latest) and then a light protein based snack when you get home, or if you are pushed for time, a light snack when you get home from work (around 5.30-6pm) and then dinner after your swim.

Regardless of the numbers in each lane, I want to re-iterate our need for patience with each other and following basic pool etiquette:

  1. Please always keep to the left of the lane to make it easier for people to overtake up the middle.
  2. When overtaking, check for oncoming traffic first and a single gentle tap on the swimmers toes to let them know you are passing.
  3. The slower swimmer always has right of way, so it is the responsibility of the person overtaking to make the pass and not impact anyone.
  4. Please try to limit overtaking at the ends of the pool as it can result in head on collisions. Always stay to the right and don’t undercut anyone.
  5. Be respectful of each other and remember we are all there to get have a good session and to have fun!

I am absolutely loving coaching these sessions and I have seen some great improvement with my regulars. I would love more club members to come along and challenge themselves. If possible, give the 7.30pm timeslot a try. We will trial it a few weeks and see how it goes. As always, your constructive feedback is very welcome.

TUESDAY 25th AUGUST

* RUN: TEMPO TRAINING –  MacDonald Park,  6-7am

Come along and try out our new tempo run training session with Coach Pippa at MacDonald Park, Padbury. (Enter off Forrest Road and park on the Forrest Road side of the Hockey Club). This session is designed to compliment your interval and long run sessions and help improve your pacing and overall run performance.  Session cost: $3. All welcome to come along!

*  CLUB RIDE:  6-7.20am, Iluka Loop

The weather for Tuesday is forecast to be clear so join the club on this good solid session that includes numerous short hill efforts and long flat sections that can be used either for recovery or sprints depending on your individual goals. At the briefing we split into groups as appropriate. The ride caters for mixed ability groups due to fixed regrouping points and a shorter route option for Group 3 that allows you to reach the regroup points at the same time as the faster riders (refer to the route description & map on the club website for details). Faster riders are usually happy for a recovery stop or can do repeats if they need to keep moving.

Note: We have slightly changed the route at the northern end at Burns Beach where we no longer turn right into Fernando Pkway. Instead, we continue straight on Burns Beach Rd to the Ocean Parade roundabout. We do a complete 180 degree turn at the roundabout then it’s left into Omara Blvd (hill), then right into Romano Cres, then right/downhill into St Lucia as per our previous route and regroup in the slip road in front of the vacant block.

TOUR DE LANCELIN 2015

Written by Janine Kaye on . Posted in News

Save the date… the “Tour ‘de Lancelin” is on again

Saturday 26th September 2015.

Get yourselves ready for an awesome ride through some beautiful rolling countryside, following the same route as 2014.

At the halfway point, we will be guests of Bill & Lill at the Willowbrook Farm caravan park, who will be providing everyone with coffee, tea and scones!

All Club members are welcome to join this ride and support crew/vehicles are encouraged. The full ride distance is 135k (one way), but if that distance seems daunting, grab a team mate or two and just ride a section. Of course, you don’t even have to ride – come up and stay for a pub lunch and enjoy to the stories of the adventure the riders had! You can bring the family for a fun day out too. There will be a car following riders so if needed you will be able to pull out at any time.

The chosen charity for this year’s ride is Lymphoma Australia. A few club members, including the 2014/15 Senior Encouragement award winner, Matt Bott, have received treatment for Lymphoma. It’s through continued donations towards research that hopefully a cure for this disease can be found. We ask all riders to make a small donation to participate in this event.

More information and details coming soon. Any questions please contact Kelli O’Neill on kjoneill@iinet.net.au or 0438 345 789.

*NEW* RUN SESSION, Tuesday 6am

Written by Janine Kaye on . Posted in News

Tuesday mornings have just become far more exciting and rewarding than ever before! Why? Because Pippa will be taking a “tempo” style run at 6am to keep your running on “track” for the upcoming tri season.

What is a tempo run I hear you ask? Firstly, it is the run you should be doing to compliment your interval session and your long run each week that will help improve your pacing and overall running performance. The idea of a tempo run is to maintain your “threshold pace” (about your 10km race pace) for up to 40 minutes or to do a variation of this to work on being able to keep your pace for longer especially for those doing the longer distances. That’s not to say you won’t benefit if you are a sprinter.

The run will go for a total of an hour and will involve a warm-up, drills a continuous run for between 20-40 minutes depending on your goals and the usual cool down and stretch.

Now we have your attention, where will you find this great session?

McDonald Reserve Padbury – Enter off Forrest Road

Park on the Forrest Road side of the Hockey Club.

Session fee : $3

CT and NOVICE ADULT RIDE

Written by Janine Kaye on . Posted in News

Just started cycling or coming back to cycling after a long time? Do find joining big rides daunting and would I like to gain some skills and confidence before joining a big group on long rides? Do you just want to spend an hour and a half on Saturdays just riding your bike?

Our Saturday morning Competitive Trystar ride starting at 6.30am from Sorrento SLC northern car park is now extended to include any adults who wish to do a non-intimidating ride of about 30km ending around 8am.

Our CT cycling coach, Cycling (Road and Track, Mountain Bike) and Triathlon Level 1 coach Kevin Chua will lead the ride and will be on-hand to offer advice on improving your cycling techniques, ride etiquette and any cycling related matters.

So wipe the dust off that bike in the shed that you planned to ride for some time now and come join this new initiative ride by NCTC, starting this Saturday morning, 6.30am SSLSC.
