Aquathlon 27th December PAIRS RACE.
With the south westerly, blowing in its usual friendly manner, and the wind swell it created, crashing against the groynes, it was not the most calming sight for those that had decided to compete in Race 6 of Al’s Cycle Surgery Aquathlon Series. However a race record of 61 participants decide to front up in the first post Christmas race of the series.
Festivities started around 5.15pm as we entertained the littleones with some sack races, balloon races and three-legged races. With Nic Thomas doing the job of handing out the lollies at the completion of each race and Dale Wesley covering more ground than most marathon runners, as he collected the bags and ties, and returning them to the start line, we managed to only lose about 50 balloons to the south westerly gale. Fortunately most tears were quickly replaced as more parents joined in blowing up balloons and getting the upset ones settled. With the first of the pizzas arriving around 5.45 the littleones were off to be fed.
We were then able to set up for the Aquathlon event. The twist for this race was that it was a paired event. You had to have a partner to start, swim, run and finish with. Everyone needed just a little encouragement from their partner to put in that extra bit of an effort to get through the race as quick as possible. With a one lap swim and 4 lap run the format was straightforward. The state junior boys in Drew, Liam, Campbell and Lachlan (to name a few) bolted at the start and got straight into it. Amongst the girls the club captain Alise teamed up with Tegan and Carly to lead early with Jessica and Alicia close behind.
There were some interesting pairs with Lee Scott and Loretta Wesley pushing each other hard, the family combos of Ryan and Breeze James competing against Aleysha and Alan Scott, and the junior pairing of Elliott Roberts and Sophie Foxcroft tearing through the field. With the many spectators cheering everyone on, it was quickly over with Ben and Campbell first home, Alyse, Carly and Tegan first in the girls, Lee and Loretta first in the over 50’s (sorry Loretta) and in the juniors Elliot and Sophie. There were excellent times from all competitors with everyone enjoying to chance to work with their partners. Congratulations to the 15 people who completed their first race for the series we hope you will be back for the next race.
With enough pizzas to satisfy one and all the evening turned out to be a very enjoyable one. Well done to all the people who helped out with registration, directing runners on the beach, recording results at the finish line and helping to feed the hordes. To all the families who came to watch, thankyou for your enthusiasm and encouragement of the competitors. Next race is January 10th so we hope to see you all there ready and raring to go.
