2012 NorthCoast“Max Greive 10km Run and 5km Bolt” (Race recap by Eddy Girvan). Friday 16th November saw another fantastic Max Greive Run for theNorthCoast Tri Club. There was great support from members and non members in our annual fund raiser for the Cancer Council. It was another opportunity to show the wonderful family atmosphere that our club is so well known for as everyone got stuck into making it a great event. Special mention and welcome to past president Peter Hall and daughter Sally. Great to see you back with us.
With in excess of 100 participants, 20 plus volunteer helpers and many supporters we were treated to some great racing. Preparation started a month before the racing with Al Nicholls supplying the chain rings for the Run and the Bolt. Tom Houston then stepped in and had these created to the chain ring trophies presented to our male and female winners. Our president then had new perpetual trophies and medallions for the first three place getters ordered. Two weeks before the race, at the monthly committee meeting, a plea for helpers was placed on Face book and with 15 minutes we had Moya Jones and children volunteer to man the water station at the MAAC area and Ruth Hazel volunteer for the lonely job as the turnaround marshal.
On the evening we had a group of master chefs and master helpers manning the Bar-B-Q, under Rosa Illingworth’s outstanding organisation. Over a two hour period they fed the non-stop stream of ravenous supporters and participants. A big thankyou to all who helped with the food, your efforts were fantastic. Similarly the volunteer helpers on the finish line drink stand, well done on your efforts. However it did not stop there with several of younger siblings collecting dropped cups and helping to keep the litter to a minimum. Thank you to Lyn and her young helper Chelsea, at registration, and Steve at the finish line, recording results. Dave Norton as usual was a workhorse, dropping off and collecting gear from the drink station at the MAAC and the turnaround.
The racing was outstanding in the 5km Bolt with Kurt Wesley, Brandon Swift and Liam McCoach having a side by side tussle for over 4km until Kurt was able to pull away to win from Brandon then Liam. Among the girls Tegan was a clear winner with Kaitlyn a good second and Pam Richards third. In the 10km Run Sam Hoffmann and Dale Harrison had a close tussle. Sam was his usually self, running himself into the ground and having a good dose of the chuck ups 2km from home. He then had to work very hard to just get away from Dale over the last kilometre. Bernie Streeter was not far behind to record a creditable third. Amongst the girls at the 5km mark it was Kate Vernon in first, Angela Burns second and Loretta Wesley third. In the run back to the turn around Loretta made up ground and managed to pull away to record a great win, with Kate second and Angela third. Well done to all competitors in the 10km Run, 5km Bolt and the 5km walkers for your participation and efforts. (Results here)
Dave Norton completed the presentations to the winners and with Dennis Tan being our resident photographer we will have a permanent record to go up on the website.
A final thank you to all participants, volunteers and supporters and to the Sorrento SLSC for allowing us the use of their premises. You all helped to made it a great evening for the club.
I accept all responsibility for any incorrect times or positions or miss-spelling of names. To Wayne Doney I apologise but we missed you as you finished and do not have a finishing time for you.
If I missed mentioning any helpers I apologise profusely.
